Valeria Scoring and Valeria Randomizer

Two phone apps for the same board game: one works out the final score, the other sets up a fresh game.

Phone apps Personal project
Who uses it
Nine people. Both apps are in closed testing on Google Play, meaning access is granted on request rather than published openly.
How long it took
One week.
Still maintained
Stable. Shared with the game’s creators, and posted publicly on Reddit and BoardGameGeek, so the testers include people who found it rather than people I asked.
Where it runs
Google Play, closed testing

The problem it solves

Valeria is scored at the end across several categories at once, which is the sort of arithmetic that produces arguments and slows the end of an evening. Separately, a game with many components tends to get set up the same familiar way every time, so the variety that was bought is never used.

How it works

  1. The scoring app walks through each scoring category in turn and does the arithmetic, so the count is settled rather than argued.
  2. The randomizer deals a fresh, valid combination of components, so a setup is different but still playable.
  3. Both run on the phone at the table, with no account and nothing to sign into.

What this is built with

Each part, and what it does, in plain terms.

A phone app
A version installed on a phone rather than opened in a browser. It is built for use at a table, in hand, while something is happening.

The publisher of the game is aware of these apps, and the work has been shared with them.
